Dental Crowns

The dental crowns offered by Dr. Louis Russell, Jr at his Tomball, TX, office provide patients with a natural appearance and restored function. These tooth-shaped caps can repair teeth that have suffered extensive damage due to decay or trauma. Dr. Russell can also attach a dental crown to a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. You can depend on Dr. Russell to produce excellent results that provide years of outstanding function and aesthetics. In some cases, he can provide same-day crowns.

A Versatile Solution

Traditionally, dental crowns are used to repair and strengthen teeth that have suffered damage caused by extensive tooth decay or trauma. In fact, crowns are usually the final step in a root canal procedure, which involves removing infected tissue from within a tooth in order to salvage the healthy exterior. They can prevent further damage to teeth that have sustained cracks or fractures that require more extensive treatment than a filling or bonding. Dental crowns are also used in conjunction with dental implants to replace missing teeth. In every case, the dental crowns are customized to fit comfortably with your bite and restore full functionality.

In addition to eliminating any tooth decay or damaged tissue, Dr. Russell must also make certain that you are not suffering from periodontal disease before placing a crown. During your consultation, he will conduct a full analysis of your oral health to identify any other issues.

Materials

There are a variety of materials used to create dental crowns. Dr. Russell uses strong materials like porcelain, zirconia, and e.max® ceramic. These materials have a natural appearance, allowing the crown to blend with your smile. They are also strong and durable. Zirconia and e.max® provide the greatest durability, but with proper care, you can expect a porcelain crown to last many years. During a consultation, Dr. Russell can help you choose the right material for your needs.

If you have a large cavity, a cracked tooth, or a single missing tooth, you can likely benefit from a dental crown.

Placing Dental Crowns

Dr. Russell will begin by removing any decayed or damaged portions of your tooth. He will then reshape your tooth to accommodate the crown. Once your tooth is ready, he will take impressions.

Depending on the material you choose, your crown will either be crafted offsite or in our office. If you choose porcelain, the impressions are transferred to our CEREC® machine, which will create your custom crown in just one visit. Zirconia and e.max crowns must be crafted offsite, and are usually completed in about two weeks. Dr. Russell can provide a temporary crown in the meantime.

Once your crown is ready, Dr. Russell will ensure it fits correctly over the tooth before cementing it in place. He will also make certain that the crown does not adversely affect the balance of your bite.
